Hi and Welcome to the Wellness Way!

If there is one thing that all of us should do more of but we don’t, is to get outdoors. The fresh air, sunshine, and greenery is magical. According to some studies, nature has strong healing powers such as improving mood, boosting the immune system, and increasing anti-cancer proteins. Combine physical activity with nature, it can help fight depression and anxiety. It doesn’t matter if it’s the beach, forest, or neighborhood park, nature offers a calming effect. Spending time in nature has positive mental health benefits, including reduced stress, better sleep and greater happiness and it’s free!

Did you know that studies show that an average American spends 90% of their time indoors and 90% of people spend 22 hours a day indoors. We have become the “Indoor Generation”. It might be difficult to find to spend in nature because of busy, day-to-day schedules or access based on living in an urban setting but it can be done with big benefits.

Here are a few ways to get you started:

Take breaks outside. Even if you only have a few minutes take a walk or eat a meal outside. Bring your attention to trees, grass and flower while listening to the birds sing. Increase your mindfulness and decrease stress by the feel wind on your skin .

Try gardening. Gardening can be a fun way to increase your physical activity and increase you contact with nature. Start by planing some flowers or even a vegetable garden that you can enjoy the bounty of later. You can begin with planter boxes and expand from there.

Plan a nature trip. You can longer periods of time with nature by planning your next trip to national or state park, lake, or beach to camp, fish, hike, bike, star-gaze, kayak or a number of other activities.

Visit nearby nature sites. Parks, streams, or public gardens are nearby to all of us, even in an urban setting. Consider exploring nature near you by having a picnic, playing games, or enjoying a walk in these free or low cost sites.
